Under the rubble after the collapse was discovered the pilot and seven-year-old child is in critical condition, was hospitalized and later died in hospital.

All 16 parachutists onboard successfully made their exit from the plane but eyewitnesses on the ground saw the plane go down.

A Garda spokesman said witnesses saw the 16 parachutists make their jumps.

"There were two people on board, the pilot and a seven-year-old boy". The bodies were recovered from the wreckage on Sunday...

Air crash investigators are surveying the scene of a fatal plane crash in Offaly to find out what happened.

The accident occurred in bogland near the Mount Lucas wind farm, not far from the Clonbullogue Airfield where the Irish Parachute Club operates.

Local Councillor Eddie Fitzpatrick of Fianna Fáil said he had been told the man was "was a very experienced pilot, about 45 or 46 years of age and he would have huge experience in flying that type of aircraft".

"People would be over there all the time, especially at weekends in the summer, a lot of people parachuting and a lot of fundraising jumpers", he said.

Local Councillor Martin O'Reilly of Sinn Féin said the community was shocked and saddened.
