"Avengers: Infinity War" collected $61.8 million in theaters in the USA and Canada this weekend, ComScore Inc. estimated in an email Sunday.
The movie's domestic weekend take of $61.8 million was the fourth-biggest gross for a film in its third weekend behind Black Panther ($66 million), Avatar ($68 million) Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($90 million) after racing past the first Avengers ($56M), not adjusted for inflation.
While Avengers: Infinity War may not have appealed to Mr Bachchan, the film has earned over Rs 200 crore at the Indian box-office to become the only Hollywood project to achieve the feat. Avengers: Infinity War, despite being in its third week of release, shows no signs of slowing down. It saw a solid holdover in North America, making $10 million in its second weekend, for a domestic tally of 29.6 million.
Its gross is massive and record-breaking, yet the question must be asked, will Avengers: Infinity War be able to turn a profit in theaters? Unlike normal superhero movies, Avengers Infinity War treads on a different path with (SPOILER ALERT BEGINS) the villains getting the upper hand over the heroes and emerging victorious (SPOILER ENDS). Melissa McCarthy's comedy "Life of the Party" debuted in second with US$18.5 million from 3,656 locations. Marvel and Disney have high hopes for the movie's prospects in China.
Written by McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, who also directed, Life of the Party centers on a middle-aged divorcée (McCarthy) who returns to college to finish her degree and winds up in class with her daughter (Molly Gordon). The thriller starring Gabrielle Union was only made for around $6 million, but it took in $16.5 million. Something, someone forgot to tell Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan about this, when he went to watch Avengers Infinity War. Reviews have been poor, and moviegoers gave it a B CinemaScore.
