Armenia's parliament held the vote for the second time on 8 May following a failed attempt at electing a prime minister on 2 May, when the ruling Republican Party voted against Pashinyan's candidacy despite their previous assurance they wouldn't do so.
Opposition politician Nikol Pashinyan is the only nominee in the vote in parliament.
The hugely popular Pashinyan had in recent weeks piled pressure on the ruling party through an unprecedented campaign of civil disobedience, leading to the shock resignation of veteran leader SerzhSarkisian, a week after he shifted to the newly-empowered role of prime minister after serving for 10 years as president.
Armenia's parliament has opened a session to elect a prime minister, for which opposition lawmaker and protest leader Nikol Pashinian is the only nominee.
In the event of the parliament's rejection of the action plan, the elected PM resigns and new elections of PM take place.
Tens of thousands of supporters of Nikol Pashinian are celebrating on the central square of Armenia's capital after the protest leader was elected the country's prime minister.
Armenians have seen their country, once the poster child for democratization following the collapse of the Soviet Union, stagnate in the hands of an entrenched oligarchy while many citizens choose to leave, Broers said. "Jobs will appear, people will return, corruption will disappear", said demonstrator Tigran Azizian, a 42-year-old worker in the city's subway.
His protest movement began with a march of non-violence on March 31, demanding Sargsyan to step down.
The new edition of the Armenian constitution stipulates that a prime minister assumes all powers of government. "There will be no people with privileged rights in Armenia, everyone will be equal before the law", he stressed. "However, if it turns out that they are ineffective, they will be discontinued", he said. He was released from jail in 2011 under a prisoner amnesty scheme and elected to parliament the next year. "And for me, my goal isn't to become prime minister".
Pashinyan, who was one of the main supporters of Ter-Petrosian, became a target for political presecutions and was forced to spend nearly 1.5 years "underground".
After blocking his bid on May 1, Republican Party provided the Pashinian with the support needed to become premier.
