Nigeria progress at World Team table tennis
Following the unification, the Unified Korea Team will be competing in the semi-finals against the victor between Japan and Ukraine as Korea (COR), and both teams will be seated at the bench during their match as a sign of unity between the teams. The team was to play Japan on Friday. The two Koreas fielded a combined team after they decided not to compete against each other in the quarter-finals.
The ROK team said the decision is "an important statement to promote peace between our countries".
For the first time in 11 decades, athletes in North and South Koreawalked in unison at the starting ceremony of an Olympic Games, while it had been at the PyongChang online games, dubbed the "Peace Olympics", the unified women's hockey workforce created its Olympic debut.
South Korean and North Korean teams pose after deciding to form a unified Korean team for the upcoming semi-finals at the World Team Table Tennis Championships 2018, at Halmstad Arena in Halmstad, Sweden May 3, 2018.
Ding said, "It was my first time playing Soo, and I didn't get well prepared".
A similar step such as this dates back to 1991 when North and South Korea played as a united team in the World Table Tennis Championship.
Suh shared that she saw a movie about the united team and now, it felt a bit unusual.
"I thought the joint team was only a part of history". Hyun Jung-hwa of South Korea and Li Bun-hui of North teamed up to win against crowd favourites China. "The ITTF's motto is 'Solidarity Through Table Tennis.' And I think the combined team fits that vision". The tournament has two bronze medalists and no third-place game. Suh Hyo-won, the captain of the South Korea team, said, "We'll surely win the semifinal match by joining forces".
Chairing the meeting of the ITTF Board of Directors was President Thomas Weikert.
Talks for joint Korean teams at the Asian Games gained traction last week following the inter-Korean summit.
