Iowa governor signs fetal 'heartbeat bill' into law

Iowa set to ban abortions after six weeks
Kim Reynolds signed the country's most restrictive abortion law Friday, banning the procedure after six weeks.
"This bill is one more example of state politicians, emboldened by the Trump-Pence administration, carrying out policy after policy that strip away people's freedoms and access to care", Laguens added."The right to control your body includes the right to access safe, legal abortion".
The restriction is the strictest abortion regulation in the nation, the AP said.
"However, this is bigger than just a law", she continued. This is about life.
"We will challenge this law with absolutely everything we have on behalf of our patients because Iowa will not go back", Suzanna de Baca, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, said in a statement.
Chants from protesters were audible in the room where Reynolds signed the bill, in a ceremony that was broadcast live. Arkansas and North Dakota have both passed similar extreme abortion laws in the past, and both were quickly voided by the courts as unconstitutional. The law bans nearly all abortions when a fetal heartbeat can be detected.
At a rally in Des Moines on Friday officials of Planned Parenthood, the women's healthcare group and backer of abortion rights, said they would file a lawsuit to block the law.
This year, MS passed a law banning abortion after 15 weeks, except in the case of medical emergencies or fetal abnormality but not including rape or incest.
But the Supreme Court has previously been hostile to "heartbeat" laws.
There was a protest of the bill today at the state capitol, and during this hour of River to River, IPR's Katarina Sostaric and Joyce Russell join guest host Emily Woodbury.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List, said the heartbeat bill could eventually present a challenge to Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision creating a constitutional right to abortion. Gov. Reynolds, we'll see you in court.
"As Pope Francis has said, 'Let us respect and love human life, especially vulnerable life in a mother's womb.' We call upon the judiciary to once again recognize that all life should be protected from the moment of conception to natural death", the bishops said. Reproductive justice advocates say the legislation, which only provides few exceptions, would effectively make abortion illegal in the state.

Vancouver applied, but was not among the finalists for the project, which Amazon says it hopes to staff with 50,000 people. Robertson said Amazon's decision to expand would add to the increase of innovation and tech jobs in Vancouver.
Nikol Pashinyan is the only candidate for PM
Note that the extension was agreed at today's meeting of the faction members with Pashinyan. That means Pashinian needs support from at least six members of the HHK to be elected.
