Iran Denies Moroccan Accusations Of Supporting Polisario Front
Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said Tuesday that his government had proof that the Lebanese Hezbollah group, which is supported by Iran, has been providing training and financial support to Polisario fighters since 2016.
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) issued a statement on Thursday backing Morocco's decision to cut diplomatic ties with Iran over the Tehran-allied Hezbollah movement's alleged support for the Western Sahara independence movement Polisario Front.
Hezbollah denied the allegations, saying Morocco was acting under American, Israeli, and Saudi pressure.
"Qatar stresses the importance of respecting the principles governing relations between states, foremost among them respect for the sovereignty of states, non-interference in their internal affairs and the resolution of disputes through dialogue and peaceful means and internationally recognized methods", Qatar's Foreign Affairs Ministry pointed out in a statement released on Tuesday. He says Hezbollah sent its first supply of weaponry to the Polisario last month, prompting Morocco's decision to cut ties.
In his visit, Bourita met with Iranian counterpart Jawad Zarif.
Two days after Morocco announced that it is cutting diplomatic ties with Iran, Kuwait has chosen to react through an "anonymous source" within its Foreign Ministry.
Hezbollah has also strictly rejected the allegation, saying in a statement that Morocco had chose to cut ties with Iran under "American, Israeli and Saudi pressure". Rabat has consistently argued that Western Sahara forms an integral part of its territory. "Morocco seeks a protection for its withdrawal from negotiations (with the Frente POLISARIO) which should lead to a consultation, self-determination of the Spanish last colony, in accordance with United Nations settlement plan", he said.
