The combined influx of caravan members and Mexican asylum seekers has caused a backlog at Customs and Border Protection's San Ysidro holding facility, which can house about 300 migrants.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, who announced federal charges for members of the infamous open borders caravan earlier this week, is sending additional resources to the US southern border with Mexico to handle the ongoing border crisis.

The figure included people from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, he added.

"The American people made very clear their desire to secure our borders and prioritize the public safety and national security of our homeland", Sessions said about the move.

Count for today is actually around ~65 people allowed to exercise their legal right to seek asylum.

The 65 people allowed to enter was a sharp increase, as only a few asylum seekers had been allowed in each day for the past week.

The U.S. Department of Justice said on Monday it had launched prosecutions against 11 "suspected" caravan members on charges of crossing the border illegally.

Other migrants wandered among boxes of cereal and diapers in a labyrinth of giant tents, near-luxury conditions for the bedraggled migrants, compared to the scarcity they had endured for weeks on their journey through Mexico to the USA border.

The group of men, women and children were allowed to make their way into the port of entry border crossing in California on Thursday morning, joining dozens of others who had already crossed.

She said the difficulties of scaling the language barrier in her own home will pale in comparison to what she has seen during prior visits to the U.S. -Mexico border and her work in MA helping immigration detainees make phone calls to families.

The Trump administration initiated a crackdown on undocumented immigrants shortly after the president assumed office in January.

In a recent interview with ABC News, McAleenan said 70 to 80 percent of those who claim asylum at the border are let into the country because they meet the "low threshold" of having a possible case to make.
