Amazon to add 3000 Vancouver tech jobs via Hub expansion
03 May 2018, 02:16 | Shelley Chandler
Amazon will move into a new 416,000 square-foot office in Vancouver in 2022 at QuadReal’s The Post redevelopment
Amazon will be expanding Vancouver's tech hub by opening a new headquarters in the city's downtown core.
Between those workers, the 1,000-worker expansion Amazon announced last fall and Monday's announcement, the company expects to have 5,000 employees in Vancouver in the coming years.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was present at the announcement to mark the company's latest investment in Canada, "Our vibrant cities, which are home to some of the best talent in the world, are poised to attract premier investment that creates the jobs of tomorrow". In the meantime, Canada launched a fast-track visa program for highly skilled workers previous year, which indeed, may very well have something to do with Amazon's decision on Vancouver. These new jobs will focus on Amazon web services, Audible and Alexa. Vancouver applied, but was not among the finalists for the project, which Amazon says it hopes to staff with 50,000 people.
According an April 30 release, the Seattle-based tech giant's Vancouver-based Development Centre will be seeking workers in e-commerce technology, cloud computing, and machine learning for its 416,000-square-foot space, which will be located in the Post, a converted mid-20th century post office located in the city's Crosstown neighbourhood. Since 2011, Amazon has invested more than $400 million in the city, adding corporate offices and fulfilment centers. "I've loved working here as we've continued to grow", said Rebecca McKnight, an Amazon software development engineer, during Monday's announcement. Dougherty. echoed the prime minister's sentiments, saying, We chose to build and grow in Canada because we recognize the diverse and exceptionally talented workforce here.
The new jobs will bring the company's workforce in Canada to over 9,000.
Mr. Robertson said Amazon's decision to expand would add to the increase of innovation and tech jobs in Vancouver.
