Trump Honors Hero Southwest Pilot At White House

Family of newlywed sues American Airlines for her death

President Donald Trump shakes hands with pilot Tammie Jo Shults as he meets with crew and passengers of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington Tuesday

A passenger is suing Southwest Airlines after a flight where the engine exploded, killing another passenger.

Chavez alleges she suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety, as well as other injuries.

"The actions of the crew and passengers of Southwest Flight 1380 show the great character of our nation", Trump said at his desk.

Passenger Jennifer Riordan was almost sucked out of the window on Flight 1380, and was killed.

The Dallas-bound flight left New York's LaGuardia Airport on the morning of April 17 with 144 passengers aboard. However, she and first officer Darren Ellisor, who were hailed by passengers as "heroes", released a statement to convey their thanks and gratitude in the aftermath of the accident.

The family of a SC woman has filed a wrongful death lawsuit accusing American Airlines of refusing to make an emergency landing after she fell ill during an April 2016 flight, leading to her death from an embolism three days later.

"Despite knowing of the risky condition of the subject aircraft's engine, the defendants risked the lives of more than a hundred innocent passengers", the lawsuit alleges. National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt said that a fatigue fracture likely caused the engine to fail, but that it would have been hard to detect.

Southwest has said it would speed up its inspections and complete ultrasonic scans of CFM56 engines within 30 days. We can't comment on any pending litigation. It responded to NPR by email, "Our focus remains on working with the [National Transportation Safety Board] to support their investigation".

Also named in the Thursday suit are France's Safran S.A., General Electric Aviation and CFM International, the manufacturers behind the engine that broke apart.
