Salah has been the superstar of the season

Liverpool FC transfer news Mohamed Salah set to double his money as Reds plan contract talks

Tuesday's announcement also sees Salah complete a personal double, having last month been named the 2017-18 Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year, finishing ahead of De Bruyne and Kane in the vote of their peers.

Belgium global De Bruyne had been considered the favourite for both awards for much of the season, but Salah's consistent and remarkable goal-scoring form has just given him the edge, winning by 20 votes.

The 25-year-old becomes the first African victor of the prestigious FWA accolade, which has been awarded since 1948.

LIVERPOOL are in close contact with Mohamed Salah's agent over a new deal for the Egypt star.

The "Egyptian King" has been in scintillating form all season, scoring 43 goals from 48 games already this season.

The Reds forward joins Ian Callaghan, Kevin Keegan, Emlyn Hughes, Kenny Dalglish (twice), Terry McDermott, Ian Rush, John Barnes (twice), Steve Nicol, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez in winning the award while representing Liverpool.

The other players to receive votes were Sergio Aguero, Christian Eriksen, Roberto Firmino, David Silva, Raheem Sterling, Jan Vertonghen and Nick Pope.

'What a race it has been between two players who, in a relatively short time, have reached genuine world class.

FWA chairman Patrick Barclay described the battle between the two as "the toughest call since 1968-69", when there was a dead heat between Tony Book of Manchester City and Derby's Dave Mackay.

Jurgen Klopp's side travel to the Stadio Olimpico on Wednesday for the return leg with a 5-2 lead over the Italians.
