In their advice to USA consumers, CDC said: "Do not eat or buy romaine lettuce unless you can confirm it is not from the Yuma, Arizona, growing region".

Sickness traced to tainted romaine lettuce has now been reported in 22 states, with incidents in Mississippi, Tennessee and Wisconsin reported last week.

Tests have confirmed that the strain of Escherichia coli O157:H7 bacteria in the current outbreak produces a type of toxin that causes more severe illness.

Erring on the side of caution, Wise said: "People should not be eating any type of romaine lettuce".

Dr. Fertel said that E.coli is a bacteria that exists in multiple strains, and is typically found in the intestines of humans and animals.

In the meantime, people should not buy or eat romaine unless they know it's not from Yuma. Officials said that as the growing season was over, the farm was not growing any more lettuce.

"We haven't been able to guarantee that there's no product coming out of Yuma at this point", said Stic Harris of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration during a briefing for reporters.

" This is a greater hospitalization rate than normal for E. coli O157: H7 infections, which is generally around 30 percent", the company stated.

Health officials have found no other lettuce aside from romaine to be impacted by the outbreak.

People with HUS should be hospitalized because their kidneys may stop working.

No deaths have been linked to the outbreak to date.

Illnesses have now been reported in Mississippi, Tennesse\e, and Wisconsin and 19 other states, including OH and Pennsylvania.

Most of the patients said they ate romaine lettuce in a salad at a restaurant. That includes whole heads, hearts, chopped romaine, salads and salad mixes containing romaine. The symptoms include loss of appetite, fatigue, severe abdominal cramping, diarrhea and fever.

Three major grocery store chains in Berks County - Giant Food Stores, Weis Markets and Redner's Markets - said they get their romaine from suppliers in California and Florida, so their lettuce is safe.

People who have become sick with E. coli will begin to feel the symptoms between two and eight days after consumption of the contaminated food. Attorney Fred Pritzker recently won $7.5 million for young client whose kidneys failed after he developed hemolytic uremic syndrome because of an E. coli infection.
