CAN fixes date for protest against killer herdsmen

At least seven people have been killed after suspected herdsmen carried out attacks on a church and primary school in Logo local government area of Benue state on Thursday, April 26, 2018.

The attack came despite the outcry and condemnation that trailed the killing of two Catholic Priests and 17 worshippers at Mbalon Catholic Church in Gwer East Local government area of the state, three days earlier.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that President Buhari expressed condolence over the reported killing of 15 worshippers and two religious leaders by gunmen in Benue state.

"This latest assault on innocent persons is particularly despicable", Buhari said, according to AFP. He assured the people that the assailants will be caught and brought to justice.

After the attack on the church, the herdsmen proceeded to shoot residents in the area and set fire to around 50 homes, according to survivor Peter Iorver, whose stepmother had been a victim.

Dickson Taki, a member of the house of representatives from Benue State, said this while addressing the plenary on Wednesday.

The herdsmen were said to have invaded Mbamondo clan around 12.20am and attacked some displaced persons who had taken refuge at an African Church in the area and killed seven of them.

Richard Nyajo, Chairman of the council confirmed the incident to Punch.

"CAN urges Christians in Nigeria to hold peaceful protests on the set aside date in the premises of their churches, asking the Federal government and the security agencies to stop the unending killings and bloodshed in the country", the Rev. Supo Ayokunle, president of CAN, said in a statement.

CAN called on Chrisians to protest peacefully in churches on Sunday against the killings.

It attributed the continued killings to the failure of the government to mount an effective campaign against the attacks, killings by the herdsmen, noting that there was equally no visible plan to pacify the aggrieved.

"The Association also calls on the heads of the security agencies to wake up to their constitutional role of protecting lives and property across the federation while preventing Nigeria from descending into chaos and lawlessness".

"Rather than arrest and prosecute the Fulani herdsmen, security forces usually manned by Muslims from the North offer them protection as they unleash terror with impunity on the Nigerian people".
