Armenian MPs to elect new prime minister

Armenia's Parliament To Vote For New Prime Minister On May 1

The leader of the Armenian opposition movement Nikol Pashinyan said at a rally in Yerevan on Thursday that either he would be elected prime minister of Armenia, or the country would have no prime minister at all.

Observers have warned the crisis could destabilise the Moscow-allied nation which has been involved in a decades-long territorial dispute with Azerbaijan.

The Republican Party still holds a majority of 58 seats of 105 in Armenia's parliament, the National Assembly.

Before Sargsyan became prime minister, the constitution was amended to give that post increased authority.

The parliament is to elect the prime minister on May 1.

Pashinian and his supporters are demanding that parliament choose a "people's candidate" who is not from the ruling Republican Party for the role of prime minister. A candidate would need 53 votes to get elected.

Talks between Pashinyan and acting government head Karen Karapetyan to discuss a "peaceful" transfer of power were cancelled this week.

Russian Federation is a close ally of Armenia, a former Soviet republic.

Speaking earlier in the day, Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged the importance of "compromise".

Pashinyan said on Wednesday that he had received assurances from Russian officials that Moscow would not intervene in the crisis, and Edward Nalbandian, Armenia's foreign minister, was in Moscow on Thursday for talks.

Officials from the Russian embassy in Yerevan have also met with Pashinyan.

Serzh Sarksyan quit as prime minister on Monday following two weeks of street protests over alleged corruption and cronyism. "No one in Armenia should ever have power, except the people", he said.

"It's impossible to tell if the country will come out of this chaos on May 1", analyst Ervand Bozoyan said, adding that frantic backdoor negotiations were under way among political parties.

"We expect that all parliamentary factions without preconditions will recognize the victory of the people".

Pashinian has threatened extended protests, which continued Thursday, if the Republican Party nominates a candidate.
