GM partners with Amazon to offer vehicle owners in-car delivery service
25 April 2018, 02:19 | Shelley Chandler
Amazon which recently started an offer to deliver packages inside people's homes now offers to deliver inside people's cars.
"We've been delighted with the customer response to free two-hour delivery through Prime Now and we're excited to bring the service to our customers in Denver, Sacramento and San Diego", said Christina Minardi, Whole Foods Market Executive Vice President of Operations.
Another customer has been using the new service to have birthday presents for her daughter delivered.
Including Salt Lake City, Amazon launched it's "Amazon Key In Car" program, allowing members of it's prime program to ask for packages to be delivered to their vehicle, so long as it's parked in a public place. It doesn't matter whether you pick Same Day, Two-Day or Standard Shipping; all items will be able to be dropped off to your auto. More cars and locations are expected to be added "over time".
"If you trust Amazon with your data, as many people do, then delivery to the trunk of your vehicle is a safe way to getting your package, and perhaps safer than in-home delivery", said Albert Gidari, director of privacy at the Center for Internet & Society at Stanford Law School. Once the address of their auto has been registered, customers select the "In-Car" delivery option at checkout. Packages that weigh over 50 pounds, are larger than 26 x 21 x 16 inches in size, require a signature, are valued over $1,300, or come from a third-party seller also are not eligible for in-car delivery. Now, Amazon is offering to drop off packages straight to the trunk of your parked auto. Those using the feature will receive a notification when their package is en route.
She described herself as a busy stay-at-home mom who frequently gets packages from Amazon and said this enabled her to receive them without worrying about her kids getting woken up from their naps.
The service allows eligible AmazonPrime members throughout 37 USA cities to have items dropped off in their vehicle trunks. "This product may not be for everyone", Rohit Shrivastava, general manager of Amazon Key, said. The vehicle is then remotely unlocked and the package is placed inside. The online retailer announced Tuesday that in-car deliveries are now available. And previous year, it introduced Amazon Key, which lets its couriers unlock customers' front doors and drop packages inside. Packages can put in the vehicle's trunk or out of plain sight.
Another consideration is that Key In-Car has a raft of restrictions on user eligibility and what packages can delivered, which further limits its appeal. When this is setup customers will need to make their vehicles available within two blocks of the set delivery location on the day that delivery is scheduled. We only actually do the unlock if its [sic] the right person, right place, right vehicle, right time.
