APNewsBreak: California rejects border duties for troops

California ready to deploy troops to border, governor says, despite Trump's tweet
Differences involving the US and also California authorities about the responsibilities California troops could work, as stated by the Associated Press, soured during the weekend after California authorities told the Trump government they wouldn't engage in vehicle maintenance and also other initial jobs all over the border in California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas.
President Donald Trump's administration's initial plan for the Guard deployment involves too much immigration-related work, California said, according to The Associated Press, which cited two USA officials with knowledge of the discussions.
The head of the U.S. Border Patrol on Monday could not rule out the possibility that some National Guard troops deployed to the U.S. -Mexico border might be armed for self defense, though troops deployed to date are unarmed.
So far there are about 900 troops involved - 250 in Arizona, 650 in Texas and 60 in New Mexico. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen told Fox News in a recent interview that "Given the numbers we had last month, they just came out, 50,000 in April is the number that we interdicted or otherwise was inadmissible".
Brown's office responded with a tweet reiterating its public stance that nothing has changed since the governor pledged 400 troops last week and that the state was waiting on a response to proposed contract that would include a ban on any activities related to immigration enforcement.
California Gov. Jerry Brown continued to his back-and-forth with the Trump administration on what role that state's troops will play.
Salesses was clear that the troops deployed to the border states "would not perform law enforcement functions" and would "not be placed in direct contact with personnel coming to the border". "So we got plenty to do with respect to our borders", said Brown.
The Trump administration says it will send as many as 4,000 to cope with a jump in illegal crossings, after arrests along the Mexico border hit their highest level in 15 months.
Brown said the Chinese government is seeking to dominate the electric vehicle market, and accused Pruitt and the administration of "collaborating in shifting the auto industry to China".
Ronald Vitiello, U.S. Customs and Border Protection's acting deputy commissioner, said Monday that Brown rejected terms of an initial troop rollout that was similar to plans for Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. They would not, for instance, fix vehicles or operate remote-control surveillance cameras. Nor has California explained what criteria it would use to distinguish between immigration-related tasks and tracking transnational gangs, human traffickers and drug smugglers. "But our National Guard general has been in touch with the National Guard people in Washington and from this perspective, he knows what the mission is, he's ready to go", said Brown. "Under the law, we're not required to".
Officials holding the afternoon briefing stated that there are now 900 National Guard troops deployed to the southern border between three states: Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.
State and federal officials sent conflicting messages.
