The opening stemmed from an error from Shkodran Mustafi, who was an accident waiting to happen in the heart of Arsenal's defence, and Southampton's reward arrived in the 17th minute.

A brace from Danny Welbeck sandwiched by a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finish saw the Gunners always in control despite Shane Long and Charlie Austin levelling before Jack Stephens was sent off late in the game for indiscipline following a spat with Jack Wilshere.

Long's last goal came against Crystal Palace in January where he also opened the lead before the Saints eventually went onto lose 2-1 at St. Mary's Stadium.

DANNY Welbeck scored two goals and got an assist as Arsenal overcame Southampton at the Emirates Stadium this afternoon (Sunday).

Aubameyang found the back of the net once again for the Gunners in their win over Southampton earlier today.

The England forward had not scored a single league goal since September past year, but proved the catalyst for a much-changed Arsenal side ahead of their Europa League quarter-final second leg at CSKA Moscow on Thursday.

But Welbeck got the victor with a powerful downward header ten minutes before the end to bag the win for Arsenal, in a game which saw late dismissals for Jack Stephens and Mohamed Elneny.

Danny Welbeck made up for an terrible miss just moments earlier, by doubling his goal haul to two, today.

The Saints were level in the second half thanks to super sub Charlie Austin, but Welbeck headed in the victor for the hosts.

"At that point you need to have clarity of thought to make sure you take something out of the game", Hughes said.

The quarter-final tie began in explosive fashion when Aaron Ramsey scored twice for the home side within the first 10 minutes, however, the first of which was disallowed for a marginal but correct offside decision.

'He will not be available for Thursday (v CSKA) and not for Newcastle and certainly not for the week after, I think we play West Ham. They can win the Europa League this season to qualify for the Champions League, but making the Champions League this season through Premier League play is almost impossible as the team is 16 points back of fourth place.
