Bus carrying fans to the Masters crashes; driver charged with DUI

Tour bus driver is charged with DUI after a dozen people are injured when his vehicle flips over en route to Masters golf tournament

A bus crash on I-20 near mile marker 186 and Exit 185 in Columbia County injured at least nine people Thursday morning, according the Georgia State Patrol.

The driver of the bus, Steven Hoppenbrouwer, 61, was found to be under the influence of a controlled substance and has been charged with DUI and with with failure to maintain lane. Five are in serious condition and two are in fair condition, Parrish said. The others hurt didn't receive life-threatening injuries.

Georgia State Patrol officials told news outlets that the bus carrying 18 people crashed on Interstate 20 around 8:45 a.m. Thursday, just as fans were driving in for the tournament's first round. Time to lock this alchy bus driver up for life. Wright said investigators believe Hoppenbrouwer had been using drugs, not alcohol.

Plowman said the bus careened off the road and spun around one and a half times before skidding on its side a good distance.

Authorities have closed one lane of traffic in both directions.

The Georgia Department of Transportation reports that eastbound drivers should seek alternate routes. He said: "It's not the way we planned the day".

Now we have 7 people in the hospital, instead of at Amen Corner eating a pimento cheese sandwich with an icy cold beer.

The bus is owned by Executive Limousine.

He said the interior of the bus matched a photo on the company's website showing colorful strip lighting, a single row of seats lining each side of the bus and cocktail glasses hanging over a bar.

A phone number listed for Hoppenbrouwer was disconnected.
