Catalan Ex-Head Hopes to Leave for Belgium After Сourt Session in Berlin

Catalonia's Carles Puigdemont calls on Madrid to 'respect democracy'

Spain is seeking Puigdemont's extradition for rebellion and misuse of public funds in organising an unauthorised referendum past year on Catalonia's independence from Spain.

Catalan ex-leader Carles Puigdemont has said he wants to return to Belgium at the end of German legal proceedings.

On March 23, Spanish Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena initiated a European arrest warrant for 25 Catalan politicians, including Puigdemont, regarding the illegitimate Catalan independence referendum of 2017.

Puigdemont's camp was reinvigorated Thursday after the German court declined to consider a Spanish judge's request to have him extradited on rebellion charges.

A German court is deciding whether Puigdemont should be extradited on the lesser charge of misuse of public funds to hold a banned referendum on independence for Catalonia a year ago.

Spain's Supreme Court reactivated global arrest warrants last month for Puigdemont and four other Catalan politicians who went into self-imposed exile a year ago.

Responding to the ruling, a Spanish official said Mariano Rajoy's government respects judicial decisions "always, when it likes them and when it doesn't".

The official, who spoke under customary anonymity, said "Spanish justice will adopt the appropriate measures in the face of these new circumstances".

German prosecutors have argued that the charge of rebellion is similar to Germany's offence of treason.

The autonomous region of Catalonia held a referendum on independence on October 1, in which over 90 percent of the 2.26 million Catalans, who participated in the vote, approved the region's secession from Spain.

A jailed Catalan pro-independence activist was on Saturday proposed as the new regional president for a second time despite a failed first attempt.

Speaker Roger Torrent said Saturday he will propose Jordi Sanchez as the regional presidential candidate, even though Sanchez is detained for his part in an illegal- and unsuccessful- secession bid by Catalonia previous year.

He has been living in Belgium since fleeing Spain to escape arrest, and has been held at a prison in Neumuenster.

Trapero was hailed in Catalonia as a local hero for the handling of deadly extremist attacks in and near Barcelona last summer.
