Australia went some way towards easing the pain of Rio 2016 as the Commonwealth Games hosts sealed a hat-trick of track cycling golds today, demolishing a world record along the way.

South Africa's Henri Schoeman broke away early in the run leg to finish in 52 minutes, 31 seconds and beat Jacob Birtwhistle of Australia by seven seconds.

The men's team pursuit's disqualification concluded a hectic period at the velodrome, with it initially being announced over the velodrome PA that it was the women's team pursuit who had been disqualified.

On the opening night of the track cycling events, the men's triumph came soon after their female compatriots smashed New Zealand in the gold medal decider in the same event.

Two years after their Rio Olympic campaign was essentially over before it began with a training crash on the eve of competition, the Australian squad won the first ever women's team pursuit on the Commonwealth Games program.

PROUD OUT: World champion Proud was disqualified from the 50-meter butterfly after winning his morning race in the preliminaries.

"I am in the shape of my life and am gutted to miss out on the opportunity to show what I can do", said Proud, who lost an appeal against the disqualification.

"This is the stuff of dreams and to have that in reality is something I'd never take for granted again".
