Separate reportssaid that Apple is planning big changes for the MacBook line starting with 2020, when Intel chips should be replaced with Apple's own processors.
Both Intel and Apple are significant employers in Ireland, employing around 4,000 and 5,000 people, respectively. Well, it's not just Apple but other companies like Microsoft are also implementing something similar but they will most likely stick to just the software aspect.
The move would impact Intel, as the company now supplies the processors for Mac computers. The project, codenamed Kalamata, remains in its early stages but comes as a piece of a larger parcel in which Apple aims to make Macs, iPads, and iPhoneswork more similarly and seamlessly together.
The Cupertino company's A-series of processors now power iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches and TVs, with the latest chip, the A11, installed in the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X. According to Bloomberg, Apple approximately accounts for five percent of Intel's annual revenue.
As reported by 9to5Mac, the Facebook-owned company joins Twitter, Amazon, eBay, Google (Maps) and Slack in shutting down their dedicated Apple Watch apps.
Unlike current OLED screens, the new screens will use different light-emitting compounds, which will make future gadgets, 'slimmer, brighter and less power-hungry.' At the moment, the iPhone X is Apple's first phone which uses an OLED display.
Intel has seen its key PC market decline, but it was able to achieve a new business with Apple by providing 4G chips for some iPhones.
By moving away from Intel chips will allow Apple to freely release new Mac models without having to wait on new Intel chips. An Apple with the capability to manufacturer processing chips for its own products can also start providing them to other companies. Blue Sky Asset Management LLC purchased a new position in shares of Apple during the second quarter worth $108,000. All 15 members of the group lost at least 2.6 per cent, with Intel down 6.1 per cent, its biggest rout since January 2016.
Stifel analyst Kevin Cassidy said in a note he believed the market was "over reacting" to the report on Apple's plans and that Intel's prospects remained good. A dip of such magnitude qualifies as the largest intraday dip for Intel since the last two years.
