Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School returned from spring break on Monday (local time) and were greeted by security barriers and bag check lines.

The bags were yet another stark reminder of how much had changed since a former student stormed the hallways on February 14, gunning down 17 people, junior Kai Koerber said. "No matter how much we tell them to listen to us there will always be a backpack manufacturer saying, "Hey they need clear backpacks, we got you covered, or a Barricade Renter saying, "Hey do you need any extra fences that will create the illusion of safety but are easily jumpable and make all the students feel like a combination of prisoners and livestock?"

A new policy specifically for the site of the tragedy mandates, among other measures, that all students be provided with a transparent school bag, the only backpacks now allowed on the campus.

"When students return from spring break, clear backpacks are the only backpacks that will be permitted on campus", said the superintendent of Broward County Public Schools, Robert Runcie, in a letter addressed to students' families last month, according to BuzzFeed News.

"As much as I appreciate the effort, we as a country need to focus on the real issue instead of turning our schools into prisons", Ms Hogg wrote. "We shouldn't need to worry about our safety and our security while we are at school".

"They did not check my I.D.", Annabel said.

Plenty of students also joked about the backpacks, saying they wouldn't be sharing the gum their peers can now see through clear plastic. Marco Rubio and included a photo of her clear backpack with feminine products inside.

"For those of us who were there, we saw things and heard things". The school district is "exploring options" to begin using metal-detecting wands at entrances and potentially permanent metal detectors.

Thanks to the outspokenness and energy of surviving students like David Hogg and Emma Gonzalez, the tragic shooting has sparked a movement against gun violence and for common-sense gun control laws.

Following the deaths of 17 people after 19-year-old gunman Nikolas Cruz entered the school and opened fire, hundreds of thousands have been protesting for tighter gun controls. Sports bags and musical instrument cases are being searched.
