Dashcam Video of Uber Self-Driving Crash Fatality Raises Questions

Video of Fatal Self-Driving Car Accident Shows Pedestrian's Final Moments

Footage released by Tempe police shows his vehicle moving at a normal pace before Herzberg suddenly appears on the dark road in front of him.

A fatal crash that occurred when an autonomous SUV operated by Uber struck and killed a pedestrian could have better been avoided if a human was in control of the vehicle, some experts believe. Herzberg is clearly seen walking alongside her bike two to three seconds before the crash.

"The video is disturbing and heartbreaking to watch, and our thoughts continue to be with Elaine's loved ones". They continued, "Our cars remain grounded, and we're assisting local, state and federal authorities in any way we can".

Uber immediately suspended all testing of self-driving vehicles following the accident, and the National Transportation Safety Board dispatched a team to investigate the accident, reported The Verge.

This still image taken from video provided by ABC-15, shows investigators at the scene of a fatal accident involving a self driving Uber auto on the street in Tempe, Ariz. In the video, Vasquez is seen looking down just moments before the fatal collision, before looking out to the road and gasping. They can see in the dark hundreds of feet down the road, thanks to onboard radar and Lidar.

The video shows the vehicle traveling in the right-hand lane of a divided four-lane roadway.

"All of this should be looked at in excruciating detail", he said. The company also hasn't said if all systems were functioning properly, or if it was testing a previously unreported sensor array. First of all, it is not clear why moving the woman did not find the sensors robomobile: because the vehicle is equipped with not only cameras, but also a set of other sensors that need to operate effectively, including in the dark.

Hasbun said the company doesn't use different background check requirements for autonomous vehicle operators compared to those who pick up passengers in their own vehicles.

The video, Smith said, may not show the complete picture, but "this is strongly suggestive of multiple failures of Uber and its system, its automated system, and its safety driver".

Tempe police said early indications from the investigation are that the accident may not have been avoidable because Herzberg appeared to have walked directly into the SUVs path.

Abuelsamid suggests that all autonomous vehicle systems go through a variety of tests to ensure they're operating correctly, including things as simple as recognizing traffic signs, lights, etc. But what about the human driver? "The driver was eyes down most of the time, indicating complacency and not maintaining proper monitoring", said Cummings.

According to Toyota, it would restart its tests of semi-autonomous cars on closed circuits.

"Though no information is available, one would have to conclude based on this video alone, that there are problems in the Uber vehicle software that need to be rectified", he said.
