Why Winning New York May Come Down to Fixing the Subway
Shortly after US actress Cynthia Nixon, who starred in "Sex and the City" TV series, announced her intentions to run for governor of NY, voices from the pro-Israel community in the United States began to attack her over her previous support for the pro-Palestinian Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
She added, "Cynthia Nixon aggressively opposed my candidacy in NY despite my qualifications for the office and despite my strong progressive credentials".
"Cynthia Nixon aggressively opposed my candidacy in NY, despite my qualifications for the office and despite my strong progressive credentials". Now, she has made the gulf between New York's rich and poor a core message of her campaign for public office.
Quinn, a vice chair of the state Democratic Party and Cuomo supporter, denounced Nixon for endorsing Bill de Blasio over her in the 2013 Democratic primary for mayor.
A statement by Nixon's campaign called her a progressive alternative to Cuomo, referring to the governor as a centrist whose aides were mired in legal trouble. 'I know that she would be an excellent governor!'
While Nixon has strong political connections and name recognition in the city that was the backdrop for her Emmy Award-winning role as lawyer Miranda Hobbes in the HBO comedy "Sex and the City", her star power among upstate voters is less certain. She never mentions the Democratic governor she's challenging, Andrew Cuomo, the underwhelming son of the late governor Mario Cuomo. "She isn't qualified to be the governor", Quinn said.
And she revealed the pair have had a history, explainingSarah Jessica Parker's pal previously opposed her decision to run for Mayor of the city. "I was attempting to make a comparison between the two of us".
But shortly after the comments became public, Quinn told the Daily News that's not what she meant.
"Our democracy is under attack, and we Americans need to cherish and to fight for it", Nixon said during her speech.
Speaking to the New York Post, she said she was "surprised" by Nixon's announcement that she was embarking on a primary challenge to Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo.
More recently, she has been delving into issues of keen interest to New York City, the main blue stronghold in a state where suburban and rural towns upstate tend to run red.
Nixon, 51, responded to the criticism by saying being a lesbian is not the issue.
But her campaign may test the appetite of New Yorkers for a celebrity leader in the age of United States President Donald Trump, a deeply unpopular figure in NY among Democrats. But out of the sea of people voicing their skepticism, one particularly barbed retort from former New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn stood out as especially harsh. And that's why, until I see enough evidence that Cynthia Nixon can be an effective leader to change my mind, I'm not with her.
