Online Shoppers Will Get Big Benefits From Google's New Program
Google is also launching a feature called Subscribe with Google, described as "a way for people to easily subscribe to various news outlets, helping publishers engage readers across Google and the Web". Talking about Google's own products, the company is tweaking its systems to surface more authoritative content in times of breaking news moments because that's when bad actors often target platforms, the company says. "It's becoming increasingly hard to distinguish what's true (and not true) online".
We need to do more.
Google and the big-box retailers are teaming up on a new program in which those companies can have their products listed on Google Search, the Google Express shopping service, and the Google Assistant app on mobile phones and voice devices. The first one will look to combat misinformation during breaking news situations. According to Google, Subscribe with Google reflects the company's intentions to "help journalism thrive" online. Your subscription will be tied to your Google account, so you'll be able to read paywalled content wherever you're signed in.
As Australian publishers move towards a greater focus on subscriptions, it was a common bugbear within Fairfax and News Corp that Google's ecosystem didn't welcome content that sat behind a paywall.
The new initiatives aim to "build a stronger future for news" and the fund will be used to support products and partnerships with publishers.
Google's huge investment of $300 million is critical for the news industry. Craig Forman, President and CEO of McClatchy, notes that Subscribe with Google will help them in "creating a simple and frictionless way to welcome new subscribers".
Launch partners for Subscribe With Google include United Kingdom newspapers the Financial Times and The Telegraph as well as Le Figaro and Le Parisien in France and The New York Times and Washington Post in the US.
Additionally, a new News Consumer Insights Dashboard, built on top of Google Analytics, features user engagement data to help publishers understand what is resonating with users and leverage those insights to build readership.
Acknowledging that YouTube is one notable source of this, the video site is adapt work done by Google Search. Google is also launching a new tool that makes safer for news organizations and journalists to access the internet and protect their privacy. Those include things like talking about why particular stories are being covered, clearly labeling opinion or analytic content separate from pure news, and sharing information about the employees and sources that are contributing to a story. "We'll be expanding that model globally".
