By the end of the 7th century, many legends had developed about Saint Patrick.
According to the confession of Patrick, when he was about 16, he was captured by Irish pirates from his home on mainland Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland, looking after animals. He spent about six years in bondage, forced to tend sheep.

The clover sprigs have become a symbol of the holiday because of Saint Patrick. Legend says he also fought witches, turned his walking stick into a tree and banished all the snakes from Ireland. They praised him for driving out the Pagans and wrote blood-raising accounts of him throwing Pagan women from cliffs and performing exorcisms on Pagan deities.
