Report: Jake Arrieta Nearing Deal With Phillies

There still are a number of big-name free agents out there, but it appears one of them will be off the market within the next week, as Jake Arrieta is expected to sign the dotted line in short time, per USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale. That leaves the Phillies (and any other dark-horse candidates), who have both the cash and the roster space to make a deal work - assuming the two can find some middle ground, that is.

Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Sunday because the contract is pending a physical.

Jake Arrieta is reportedly heading to Philadelphia.

Arrieta has been one of the top players on a chaotic Major League Baseball free agent market all offseason.

Arrieta spent close to five seasons with the Cubs, racking up a 68-31 record with 793 strikeouts and a Cy Young award. Arrieta's career 3.08 postseason ERA is also a good indicator of his big-game potential as he had a wild-card win and Game 6 World Series victory on his resume.

The Phillies haven't had a winning season since 2011, but now have added veteran slugger Carlos Santana, Arrieta and quality relievers to a young nucleus that could show considerable improvement over last season's 66-96 mark. That seems unlikely from the Phillies, seeing as they need rotation help and could use Arrieta's veteran presence, but the market has been odd this winter.

Arrieta had a 4.67 ERA in first 16 starts last season, but finished strong, going 7-4 with a 2.26 ERA in his final 14 outings.
