Timothy Ash: West hits another stress point with Russia

Human rights campaigners have compiled a dossier detailing the scale of Vladimir Putin's 'authoritarian rule. The dossier details 50 laws which campaigners say severely restrict democracy and opposition in the country

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's indictment of the 13 Russian nationals and three Russian companies details that the Russian government spent millions of dollars annually, starting in 2013, with the specific intent of first disrupting Americans' confidence in the election system, and later, to elect Donald Trump over Hillary Clinton.

"Knowing that Putin was notoriously protective of any information about his family, Celeste Wallander proposed leaking snippets of classified intelligence to reveal the secret bank accounts in Latvia held for Putin's daughters-a direct poke at the Russian president that would be sure to infuriate him", the authors write. "Maybe they're Ukrainians, Tatars, Jews - just with a Russian citizenship".

Russian President Vladimir Putin said his country is ready to discuss any issues with the United States and urged Washington to adopt the same attitude. "I couldn't care less because they do not represent the government". "I couldn't care less".

The White House director of cybersecurity, Michael Daniel, was reportedly alarmed when he learned that Russian hackers had infiltrated critical election infrastructure in several USA states. Putin made the comments in a Moscow interview with NBC News' Megyn Kelly, the latest segment of which was released Saturday. "And we'll take a look at it". She served as Special Assistant to President Barack Obama and Senior Director for Russia/Eurasia on the National Security Council from 2013-2017. "Secondly, we don't have this quantity of tools".

Putin claimed that the United States interferes in Russian elections "all the time" but that it was "impossible for us" to do the same.

Although Putin has not explicitly positioned himself as an anti-Semite, he has aligned himself with the Russian Orthodox Church, which drew headlines for its anti-Semitic conspiracy theories late a year ago.

"Could anyone really believe that Russian Federation, thousands of miles away.influenced the outcome of the election?"

In the interview, Putin went on to say that Russian Federation had neither the tools nor the will to meddle in elections.

"Doesn't that sound ridiculous even to you? So what?" Putin said. "We do not see what goal we would accomplish by interfering".

"I wanted to send a signal that we would not tolerate disruptions to our electoral process", Daniel said.

Trump himself has repeatedly refused to condemn Russian Federation over the alleged meddling, and has said he admires Putin as a strong leader.
