Det. Sgt. Hank Idsinga said the latest unidentified remains were recovered from a planter at a Toronto property where the remains of six other people had been found.

"I've never done this and I do it with great hesitation", he said.

Did Toronto serial killer seal his own fate when he picked Andrew Kinsman as his victim?

McArthur was arrested in January and charged with the murders of Andrew Kinsman and Selim Esen, who went missing from Toronto's gay village in 2017.

It's possible that the photo wasn't taken by police and is an old picture discovered among McArthur's possessions.

Police also released the photo of a man take posthumously in an effort to identify the alleged victim. "We need to put a name to this face and bring closure to this man's loved ones".

Last month investigators confirmed that the remains of Kinsman, Mahmoudi and Navaratnam along with the remains of three unidentified men found in tubs for flowers on a plot of Mallory Crescent, where MacArthur kept the equipment for improvement of gardens. "It's a bit of a misconception", he said.

Police previously announced they had found the dismembered remains of six individuals this year in large planters at a home where McArthur, 66, did landscaping work and that he used as storage.

Monday, March 5, Idsinga reported that forensic experts have identified: in garden tubs, removed from the site, in fact, was at least seven sets of remains.

Michael Pollanen, Ontario's chief forensic pathologist, called the McArthur case a "unique investigation in the history of our organization", and pointed to a number of challenges that have impeded progress.

They have now also turned to DNA analysis.

The earliest murder charge against McArthur dates back to 2010, prompting the Alliance for South Asian AIDS Prevention to ask Toronto police to review whether there has been any discrimination in its investigation.

Pollanen said his main goal is to identify the remains and then move on to determining the cause of death - which can be hard when he's dealing with dismembered parts and decomposition.

Examiners have also not yet determined cause of death on numerous victims, with decomposition severely hampering their ability to get a complete picture.

Police are looking at unsolved missing person cases to determine if there are connections to McArthur and are running down tips that have come in from around the world.

Idsinga said he recognized the emotional harm he may cause by releasing the photo. He was accused of murdering several people and burying their remains inside large planters on the properties where he worked, according to The Guardian.

Investigators also believe there could be more victims.

Police said they were investigating the possibility of even more victims in the case.
