James Eric Davis, Jr. was spotted and reported by someone on a train that was passing through the north end of CMU's campus just after midnight, the site posted shortly before 1 a.m. Saturday.
The university identified the two dead as Davis' mother Diva Davis and father James Davis Sr., a part-time police officer in the Chicago suburb of Bellwood.
Klaus said video at the dorm suggested that Davis had fled on foot after the shooting.
The shooting happened at a dormitory on a day when parents were picking up their children at Central Michigan for the start of a week-long spring break. He was later named a suspect during a police news conference around noon. Investigators are searching for a 19-year-old suspect who is considered to be armed and risky.
Officials described the suspect as "black" and said he's considered armed and unsafe.
Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder said, "The priority right now is the safety of those still on campus". Police described the shooting as a "family-type domestic situation" and said the victims were not students. Officers were searching nearby railroad tracks and off-campus apartments.
On Thursday night, Klaus said Davis suffered what officers believed was a drug overdose or a bad reaction to drugs and he was taken to a hospital. He was treated and released from the hospital.
The shooting took place on the fourth floor of the dorm at 8:30 a.m. EST.

University President George E. Ross said the shooting had left the campus and surrounding community traumatized.
"It was like this far away thing".
The incident is coming about two weeks after a similar attack at a local high school in Florida when a 19-year-old student who was expelled from the institution opened fire killing no less than 17 people and injured 14 others.
"We made the decision early on that we would work closely with our colleagues and follow their lead in deciding whether to go ahead with the game".
The shooting happened at a residence hall at Central Michigan, which is about 70 miles north of Lansing.
