Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay told to focus on club football amid England and Scotland uncertainty

Scott McTominay has chose to play global football for Scotland instead of England, according various reports.

It is understood McTominay is torn between England, the country of his birth, and Scotland, where his father is from.

New Scotland manager Alex McLeish travelled to Manchester United's training base in Carrington last week and persuaded McTominay that his worldwide future lay in dark blue.

McTominay has since established himself as a fully-fledged member of United's first team squad with mature displays against Sevilla in the Champions League knockout stages and during last Sunday's victory over Chelsea.

McLeish is expected to now include the 21-year-old in his squad for the friendly double-header against Costa Rica and Hungary at the end of March. Download it today and continue to enjoy STV News wherever you are.

"Who will I support in the World Cup qualifiers?"

The next Darren Fletcher?

Having not represented either Scotland or England at youth level, McTominay remained available to both countries and his progress at United had caught the eye of England under-21 coach Aidy Boothroyd.

According to The Times, McTominay had sat down with both Southgate and McLeish ahead of making his decision.

"I'm sure he would have met with Alex and straight away got to see what kind of guy he is".

Jose Mourinho has advised Scott McTominay to stay focused on his development at Manchester United amid uncertainty over his worldwide future.

"I've never met them, but I have to believe the kid with his attitude towards the others and towards football, I believe the parents must be really good people that pass to him the right values".
