15 Turkish women 'affiliated' to IS condemned to death by Iraq
A court in Iraq has sentenced more than a dozen Turkishwomen to death over membership in the ISIS Takfiri terrorist group and involvement in acts of terror across the conflict-ridden Arab country.
A spokesman made the announcement Sunday as Iraq conducts trials for hundreds of foreign women who have been detained. Majority have been either sentenced to life term imprisonment or given the death penalty.
The verdicts were issued by the Central Criminal Court in Baghdad after it was proven that the 16 Turkishwomen belonged to the Islamic State.
Iraq has handed over to Russian Federation four women and 27 children suspected of having ties to the group, the foreign ministry said on Thursday, adding that they were "tricked" into joining the militants. "She is also convicted of complicity in attacking Iraqi security forces", Biraqdar said. While some women were brought to Iraq and Syria against their will, many traveled voluntarily to join militants in their self-declared "caliphate".
The Iraqi Criminal Court yesterday sentenced 15 Turkishwomen to death for belonging to Daesh. Iraq in December declared victory over the IS, which had seized control of almost a third of the country in 2014.
"In these cases, the women are getting the harshest possible sentences for what appears to be marriage to an Islamic State member or a coerced border crossing", senior Iraq researcher Belkis Wille said in a statement on the campaign group's website. While IS has been driven from its major strongholds, militants have continued to carry out suicide bombings and other attacks.
Several rights groups have condemned Iraq's treatment of suspected militants, pointing to inhumane prison conditions and a judicial process which does adhere to worldwide standards.
On Sunday, the Iraqi court sentenced 16 Turkishwomen to death by hanging for involvement with ISIS, a judiciary spokesperson announced.
