Ferry explosion

A local Mexican official said at least two Americans and three Canadians were affected.

At least 18 passengers were injured in a Wednesday morning ferry explosion at Mexican spring break hot spot Playa del Carmen.

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico said in the evening that it was aware of seven Americans hurt in the incident, while Canada's diplomatic mission said it had not received any information that any of its citizens were harmed.

Authorities in Playa Del Carmen said the cause of the explosion has not been determined, but preliminary indications suggest a mechanical failure.

Among the people involved was Rebecca Lahlum and her 14-year-old son John Lahlum from Valley City.

According to their family, the boys received cuts and bruises but they are recovering.

Police in Quintana Roo say the victims were taken into care in various hospitals. The ferry's route was from Playa del Carmen to the island of Cozumel.

The video, posted online by the newspaper Quintana Roo Hoy in Mexico, also showed a cloud of smoke oozing out of the wreckage.

The blast has left one side of the ferry, which belongs to the Barcos Caribe company, completely destroyed.
