NBC5 Editorial: Celebrating the meaning of Presidents' Day

What is Presidents' Day 2018 and how will it be celebrated

- The Museum of the American Revolution celebrates the 286th birthday of George Washington.

In the run-up to the holiday, the city of San Jose sent out a release announcing offices would be closed President's Day.

The release notes that in 1968 an attempt was also made by an IL congressman to officially change the day to "Presidents' Day, but Virginia legislators weren't too keen on it and the measure dropped".

February 22, the date of Washington's birth in 1732, became a federal holiday in 1879.

Since 1971, federal employees and school children have enjoyed a three-day holiday weekend each February.

The legislation was considered by many as an ingenious form of creating more 72-hour weekends for workers, had a wide support of the private sector and trade unions and boosted retail sales.

The holiday was established nationwide in 1885 to recognize George Washington's birthday on February 22. Diverse voices supported the suggestion to unite both dates as an alternative to give the same recognition to the US most famous statesmen in History, but the idea was not finally approved. This interpretation was fueled by the numerous states that adopted "Presidents' Day" as the holiday's name, rather than the traditional "Washington's Birthday".

All of the Monday holidays fall on the Monday nearest the actual date, except one: Washington's Birthday.

Past Presidents have often recognized the holiday with visits to Washington's tomb. We commemorate our presidents. Congressional measures to restore Washington and Lincoln's individual birthdays were proposed during the early 2000s, but all failed to gain much attention.

Kennedy were champions of their party, but put their country first.

Like Independence Day, Presidents' Day is traditionally viewed as a time of patriotic celebration and remembrance.

It seems nobody wants George Washington to have a birthday anymore.

I'm no historian, but can someone please show me where it's ever been officially decided that Presidents' Day is for all Presidents?

The library's usual prices are $16 for adults, $12 for seniors ages 62 and older, $10 for retired military members, high school and college students with identification and $6 for children ages 5 to 11.
