Published iPhone Source Code Is The 'Biggest Leak In History'

Jailbreak Might Be Easier Through iPhone Source Code Leak, Apple Claims Software Is Secured

The version posted on GitHub was supposedly iOS 9, a previous version of Apple's operating system. Rusty Carter, VP of Product at Arxan Technologies commented below. The code comes from a low-level iOS component called "iBoot" which is a trusted part of the platform. iBoot acts as a bootloader for the rest of iOS.

Now what is the repercussions of the iBoot source code being leaked? However, no one from the group has confirmed leaking the code to any outsiders, and the identities of all five remain anonymous. It ensures that the mobile OS's kernel is approved by Apple and legitimate for use on an iPhone or iPad.

Apple keeps an ultra tight grip on iOS and is not keen on sharing its proprietary code.

Jonathan Levin, the author of a series of books on iOS and Mac OSX internals, called the leak "huge", speculating the code is now making rounds in the underground iOS jailbreaking community.

Apple has since responded and said that the leak concerns source code from iOS 9, which was released in 2015.

According to these sources, the person who stole the code didn't have an axe to grind with Apple.

However, talking to BBC, Cyber-security expert Prof Alan Woodward said that security researchers and hackers will study the code to see whether there are any flaws in it that could lead to unauthorised access to the smartphones.

But leaks of this kind potentially open up the scope for iPhone hacking and no doubt a degree of furore will be churning away in communities that love nothing more than getting stuck into a piece of private code.

In a statement, the company said the security of the iPhone did not rely on "the secrecy of its source code".

Those contacts told the tech publication that the intern didn't have it out for Apple because of personal gripes, but rather that they convinced him to in order to contribute to security research they had been conducting. Who knows for what version of iOS this was even meant for, and how do we even know if the code is even meant to be on devices that have the latest iOS. "There are many layers of hardware and software protections built into our products, and we always encourage customers to update to the newest software releases to benefit from the latest protections", said Apple's spokesperson. Here's hoping they plug the leak before something like the iOS 11 source code makes its way onto the internet.

Apple has bad news for their more than 700 million iPhone users around the globe.
