Stephen Colbert Attacks White House Over Rob Porter Allegations
Trump has spoken to his former chief of staff Reince Priebus about the current state of affairs in the White House, the person familiar with the conversations said, though not specifically the fallout from the Porter allegations.
Sources told CBS News that the Federal Bureau of Investigation informed the White House about the abuse allegations in November - so how could the news have taken so long to filter through the chain of command?
The Washington Postreported late Thursday night that the White House counsel was told four times about the seriousness of the abuse allegations against Porter, but the counsel chose to ignore them because Porter was a "steadying, professional voice" in the White House.
The Daily Mail and the Intercept reported that Porter's two former wives had accused him of domestic abuse, allegations which Porter has denied.
Despite their history, Willoughby said she never wanted him to lose his White House job, because she thought he was good at it, but "this is a outcome of his actions".
It has since emerged that Porter did not receive full security clearance because of the allegations, but nevertheless worked at the president's side day in and day out, handling highly classified material. It also raises the question of who else in the White House knew, including the president himself.
A White House official said McGahn was only aware that ex-wives were prepared to make damaging accusations about him but did not ask what the accusations were because Porter said they were not true.
When McGahn informed Kelly this fall about the reason for the security clearance holdup, he agreed that Porter should remain and said he was surprised to learn that the 40-year-old had ex-wives. She also said his departure from the White House was not imminent.
Kelly staunchly defended Porter's integrity in a statement Tuesday before saying late Wednesday, after the photos of Holderness's black eye were published, that he was "shocked by the new allegations" against the staffer, who reports directly to him.
"He became fully aware about these allegations yesterday", said Shah. Willoughby, a 39-year-old writer and motivational speaker, said she authorized investigators to obtain a protective order she filed in 2010 after he refused to leave her Arlington, Virginia, apartment, in violation of their separation agreement.
The FBI had contacts with the ex-wives a second time, in September.
But she also was forthright in explaining that those powers to twist and spin have allowed Porter to avoid coming to grips with his own behavior. According to reports, he told congressional Democrats that the president was "uninformed" during the campaign when he promised a physical barrier spanning the entirety of the Southern border paid for by Mexico. She said she hadn't.
Kelly went on to infuriate immigration advocates and Democratic lawmakers on February 6 when he said some young immigrants eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program had failed to apply for the legal protections because they were too afraid - or "too lazy to get off their asses". Yet Porter had sat in on meetings of the National Security Council where top-secret matters were discussed, according to three people familiar with the situation. Holderness says Porter kicked her, chocked her, and punched her in the face on their honeymoon. "His clearance was never denied, and he resigned", Shah added.
EBay will switch to Adyen payments platform from PayPal
The announcement surprised some investors, who expected the companies to announce an extension to their operating agreement. This is in spite of PayPal's CEO Dan Schulman telling analysts that their changing relationship with eBay was "manageable".
