10 February 2018, 06:01 | Shelley Chandler
The newly discovered space rock passed within 64,000km of Earth yesterday afternoon.

While Friday's close approach isn't a huge deal, Chodas said in an email, "it is a reminder that asteroids can pass very close to our planet and it's important that we find these objects when they do get close". Its close approach to Earth came Tuesday (Feb. 6) at 12:10 p.m. PST (3:10 p.m. EST) at a distance of about 114,000 miles (184,000 kilometers).
NASA expects the asteroid to zoom past the United Kingdom at about 10.30pm GMT, travelling at five miles per second.
