US to impose 'toughest ever' sanctions on North Korea, Pence warns

The Latest: Pence says US will roll out 'toughest' sanctions

In meetings with government leaders, military officials and US service members, Pence said he wants to make sure the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics don't distract from the bellicose North Korean human rights abuses and nuclear program.

Moon will also hold a lunch with the North Korean delegation, his spokesman, Kim Eui-kyeom, told a media briefing.

Her position is such that, according to a Seoul-based think tank run by North Korean defectors, Kim Yo Jong briefly took charge of the country while her brother was reportedly ill with gout or diabetes in late 2014.

"We will continue to isolate North Korea until it abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile program once and for all".

While Choe is the only member of the North Korean delegation blacklisted by the Security Council, South Korea asked the sanctions committee for broad approval to host the entire high-level delegation from Pyongyang between February 9 and 11, according to the request seen by Reuters on Wednesday.

Pence, who is leading the USA delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea later this week, says to Abe that aside from which group of athletes they will be cheering for at the games, "I expect we'll be agreeing on just about everything else".

Tensions on the border were already high following a series of bellicose exchanges previous year between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un before the North Korean soldier defected in late November. The North has shifted to a peace offensive following a series of ballistic missile and nuclear tests in 2017.

Kim Yong Nam is president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly, while the reclusive country is ruled by Kim Jong Un, the third-generation hereditary leader.

"We'll be telling the truth about North Korea at every stop", Pence told reporters after touring missile defense facilities Monday that monitor and could respond to a launch by the North.

Seoul needed until the last minute to persuade Washington to consider the flight an exception to sanctions announced by President Donald Trump's administration in September that include banning vessels and aircraft that have visited North Korea from traveling to the United States within 180 days.

"North Korea can have a better future than the militaristic path, the path of provocation and confrontation that it's on".

Unilaterally, the USA has also targeted North Korean shipping companies and Chinese trading networks.

Pence's personal guest at the games will be Fred Warmbier, the father of Otto Warmbier, an American who died past year days after his release from captivity in North Korea.

That's the question facing South Korean President Moon Jae-in with less than 48 hours to go before the opening ceremony of the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. Seoul exempted the ferry from sanctions to allow it in South Korean waters.

Neither Kim Yo Jong nor Kim Yong Nam are among the North Korean officials blacklisted under United Nations sanctions over the North's weapons programmes, but the US Treasury Department previous year included Kim Yo Jong on its list of blacklisted officials over her position as vice director of the ruling Workers' Party's Propaganda and Agitation Department. Skeptics think North Korea is trying to use the Olympics to weaken US -led sanctions and pressure against it and buy time to advance its weapons programs.
