Bergermann enters 2018 Winter Olympics with great momentum
Friday's Opening Ceremony will spotlight a different Team USA competitor, Erin Hamlin, who has been chosen as the United States' flag bearer. Mashable has reached out to Team USA for comment and will update this post pending any further information.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Olympic Committee announced that Erin Hamlin would lead her teammates around the track in Pyeongchang. Despite that resume, Hamlin - who is retiring after the Olympics - never thought she would be the pick. Her only Olympic medal is a bronze.
Hamlin is coming off of a banner year in 2017, having taken a world championship in sprint, a silver medal in singles and another silver medal in mixed team.
To be fair, Davis' bonafides are pretty stellar, too. Four years later, he became the first skater - of any colour - to defend his title in that event.
Davis was also the first black athlete to qualify for Team USA's Olympic speedskating team. After listing several of his accomplishments, which he believes, should have made him the flag-bearer. "That would've been really cool". He took to Twitter to voice his displeasure with the process.
He implied that race played a factor in the decision.
"I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event", he wrote. No problem. I can wait until 2022. Not just does Erin get to hold that flag, but USA Luge gets to hold that flag.
He would have to keep skating until he's 39 to make it to Beijing.
Davis referenced Black History Month in that tweet. Hamlin came in first place. A tie, per USOC rules, is broken by a coin flip. I couldn't wait before, but now I can't wait even more. The luge star became the first US athlete to medal in singles luge since the event's inception in 1964. "Nobody is more deserving in my opinion". "They're really pumped. I'm sure my brothers will be". But on the day after the announcement of Hamlin's selection, it appears that Davis is unhappy with the results and feels he is more entitled to carry the flag than Hamlin.
That, too, would be a shame. "He's not selfish at all".
