CHAN 2018 final: Morocco, Nigeria began February 4 assemblage

2018 CHAN Wrap

Both sides came through tough semifinals on Wednesday evening: Morocco needed extra time to overcome a resilient Libya 3-1 in their North African derby in Casablanca, while Nigeria edged Sudan 1-0 in a hard-fought clash in Marrakech.

Ayoub Kaabi capitalized on defensive error in the Nigeria's six-yard box to score the fourth goal for Morocco.

The Eagles threatened briefly as the half wore on, but Morocco soon shot ahead after a slick move put Abdeljalil Jbira free down the left flank, his brilliant pullback from the by-line swept home by Zakaria Hadraf. Walid El Karti scored the second goal at the 61st minute of the game, while Hadraf scored a third one at the 64th minute.

NIGERIA will need to overcome a passionate home crowd as they look to win their first ever African Nations Championship in Morocco.

The 2018 African Nations Championship, known as the Total African Nations Championship (also referred to as CHAN 2018) will be the 5th edition of the biennial football competition.

- Previously unknown striker Ayoub el Kaabi was named player of the tournament after scoring a CHAN record nine goals in five starts.

In between the first goals of the tournament for Hadraf, fellow midfielder Mohamed el Karti netted soon after Nigerian attacker Eneji Moses was red-carded following a second caution.

Nigeria came into the game a little more as the first half wore on, but the hosts remained risky in attack and finally broke the deadlock just before the interval.

Two minutes later, the Lions broke again on the counter as Nigeria lost the ball on an onslaught.

In head-to-head statistics, Morocco and Nigeria have met in 12 official matches according to FIFA's database.

In the third minute after the break, the Super Eagles' task in reversing that lead got even more hard when Peter Moses was sent off.
