Mufti defends FIR against Army for Shopian firing, BJP opposes

Train service resumes in south Kashmir

As support poured in for the army from the Indian mainland, including from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which is in a coalition government in Jammu & Kashmir, several media houses in India reported that the army has filed a counter FIR in the incident.

The murder charges have been slapped on the Indian army by the Jammu and Kashmir administration that has come under enormous fire for not being able to stop civilian casualties in encounters between the security forces and insurgent groups seeking freedom of Kashmir from India.

Two civilians, both students, were killed and over six were injured on January 27 when the Army opened fire on stone-pelting protesters at Ganawpora village.

"His brain was critically damaged as he was hit on head", the doctor said. A Major, who led the Army personnel at the time of the incident, was also mentioned in the FIR.

The Army, meanwhile, had submitted its version of the incident, when its convoy was attacked in Shopian district, to the Jammu and Kashmir Police and explained its reasons for opening fire at the stone pelting mob, officials said today.

Local residents accused the Army of indiscriminate firing after they resisted attempts to remove banners of slain Hizbul Mujahideen militants.

He said the circumstances that were created by stone pelters in Shopian left no option for army men but to resort to firing in self defence.

Slamming the PDP government in J&K, Swamy said, "What's this nonsense?"

While the Army maintained it followed the standard operating procedure to deter the protesters, the Defence Ministry is silent on Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's claim in the Jammu & Kashmir Assembly on Monday that Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman gave consent for filing of an FIR against Army men.

Rayees Ahmad, who was among the nine persons injured in the army firing last week, succumbed to injuries at a hospital here this morning, police said.

"The Army's version, eyewitness accounts and the statements of those who lost their near and dear ones would be included", Vaid said in a press conference.

On naming the Major in the FIR, he said, "I think they have prematurely put the name of an individual".
