Harley-Davidson finally confirms that it is bringing its first electric motorcycle to market
A Harley-Davidson LiveWire was even used in the 2015 Hollywood film "Avengers:Age of Ultron" in a scene where Black Widow drops out of the bottom of a jet fighter astride a Harley-Davidson LiveWire.
HDFS originated $495.1 million in motorcycle loans - down 0.3% year over year - in the fourth quarter. "Our Kansas City assembly operations will leave a legacy of safety, quality, collaboration and manufacturing leadership", Matt Levatich, Harley Davidson president and chief executive officer, said in the statement.
In all, the LiveWire was a really good electric bike in 2014, when many of its competitors still felt a little toy-like and under-developed. Levatich said Tuesday the feedback from those rides and other research gives the company confidence an electric motorcycle will be attractive to new riders and existing Harley customers. The silver lining to this challenging year was that the company added 32,000 new Harley-Davidson riders in the US after taking several measures to create a more welcoming and all-inclusive brand. Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE:PII), a one-time rival of Harley-Davidson, started winding down its "Victory" motorcycle operations in early 2017. This optimization initiative will lead to a reduction in operating income of $170 to $200 million through 2019 after which the company expects to see an ongoing cash savings of $65 to $75 million.
An electric motorcycle will, of course, not make burbling or popping noises.
Unfortunately for 800 Harley-Davidson employees in the Kansas City area, the Trump con is up and Harley-Davidson is closing the Kansas City assembly plant.
Harley-Davidson's retail motorcycle sales were off sharply in the company's latest quarterly earnings report.
It's no secret that the US motorcycle industry is in a downturn right now; industry-wide Q4 sales are down 6.5 percent compared to 2016, with Harley alone down 11.1 percent.
Worldwide sales fell 6.7-percent previous year. He said there were 32,000 more Harley riders at the end of 2017 than there were at the end of 2016. The Palisade Capital Management Llc holds 1.25 million shares with $23.43M value, up from 1.23 million last quarter. Over the past 12 months, the company's shares are down more than 12 percent.
Plans are underway to expand the York County plant, which will produce all Harley models, including the Softail, Sportster and Street motorcycles now made in Kansas City, according to spokeswoman Bernadette Lauer.
"The flux within the industry is higher than we thought", he said.
