Kesha triumphs at Grammys with emotional #TimesUp performance

29 January 2018, 09:05 | Lowell Little

From the moment Kesha was announced as a performer at this year's Grammy Awards ceremony in NY, expectations that she'd deliver a highly emotionally-charged performance were high. She was not nominated in major categories and came up short for the two pop prizes for which she was in the running. Rising young pop singer Daya said that Kesha 's performance left her in tears. The singer's drawn-out legal battle with the producer Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald (whom she has accused of sexual, emotional, and physical abuse) has practically made her the music industry's poster woman for the movement. In the emotional ballad, Kesha sings about acquiring self-confidence after being "put through hell".

Kesha, 30, explained what the song meant to her in an essay on Lenny Letter, the website run by actress Lena Dunham.

Where many Grammy songs performed months after their initial release seem exhausted, Kesha's voice was packed with emotion, as if it were the first time she sang "Praying".

Her single Praying had been her first release in four years and served as a tribute to the hard times she had overcome.

It was one of several political moments during Sunday's broadcast of the 60th annual Grammy Awards from New York City.

"When I wrote 'Praying, ' with Ben Abraham and Ryan Lewis, I just felt as if I had gotten a huge weight off of my shoulders", she wrote on Instagram. It was, as the Grammys voiceover told the audience before the previous commercial break, "a powerful Grammys moment from Kesha that speaks to our times". I never could have known what would've happened these past few years.

Kesha then took the stage, wearing all white, joined by a chorus of female singers such as Andra Day, Cyndi Lauper and Bebe Rexha to sing her song, "Praying".
