White House Says It Will Soon Release Framework On Immigration Reform

After the shutdown, 4 things that make the road ahead to a 'DREAMer' deal rocky

The vote led to a government shutdown at midnight on Saturday, Jan. 20, which lasted three days.

The stopgap funding measure did, however, include a six-year extension for the Children's Health Insurance (CHIP) program and rolled back some taxes related to health care. He relented Monday, voting for funding without a plan but with a commitment from Republicans that the Senate would turn to an immigration debate in the upcoming weeks.

"I disagree with that approach", Cornyn said.

"We're starting over", Schumer told CNN on Wednesday when asked about the latest on the standoff over the Congress' plans for addressing the expiring Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy.

Sen. Sherrod Brown and other Senate Democrats continue to press for a bill to address the fate of DACA recipients, also known as DREAMers. We don't know. Neither do McConnell, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY, or President Donald Trump. D-N.Y., even taunted President Trump: "The great deal-making president sat on the sidelines".

In backing the bill, sponsored by Rep. Thousands of federal employees who had been placed on temporary, unpaid leave since Saturday, breathed a sigh of relief, the BBC reported. But he says the courts agree with him that a DACA solution should be the responsibility of Congress, not the president.

"As we found time and again, when we open up the negotiations to discussions of broad immigration reform, there is no end to what each party says could be on the table", Schumer said.

"The clock is ticking", Schumer said Wednesday on the Senate floor.

To recap: Schumer is saying there will be no wall anymore.

Despite Trump's remarks, Democrats remained cautious ahead of the unveiling of the White House framework. However, border security, the wall and other immigration reforms should be handled separately from DACA.

Sen. Lindsey Graham commented on the centrist groups that are forming to get an immigration agreement passed.

Trump said earlier that citizenship for the roughly 700,000 people whose legal protections run out March 5 is "going to happen, at some point in the future, over a period of 10 to 12 years". Charles Schumer to take action and stand up for them.

The poll was conducted mostly while the government was closed, though a number of responses were received after the Congressional vote to reopen the government.

After being condemned by both Republicans and Democrats for this language, lawmakers still sought to find a deal in order to avert this shutdown.

"Should these issues not be resolved by the time the funding bill before us expires on February 8, so long as the government remains open, it would be my intention to take up legislation here in the Senate that would address DACA, border security and related issues as well as disaster relief", McConnell said on the Senate floor.

"I know who's written it", said Durbin.

For now, Mr. Trump remains the most important figure in the debate - and he is maintaining plenty of negotiating room.

For immigration legislation to be enacted into law, the House of Representatives ultimately would have to pass a bill identical to whatever the Senate approves.

The so-called "Dreamers" deserve leniency because they came here through no fault of their own. A majority, 58 percent of respondents, argue that they should become citizens if they meet certain requirements, but another 18 percent think they should become legal residents but not citizens.

The high school senior says he's upset the Democratic leader didn't do more this week to secure legislation to prevent the deportation of at least 800,000 illegal immigrants brought to the United States as children.

"The White House refused to engage in negotiations over the weekend".
