Italy: Train derails near Milan, deaths reported

Milan rail crash: At least two dead and 10 seriously injured after passenger train derails in Italy

At least three people were killed and dozens injured Thursday when a train derailed and crashed near the Italian city of Milan, the Italian fire department said.

Trenord, the railway company operating the commuter trains, has halted services between Milan and Treviglio.

Two carriages came off the rails, coming to rest at an angle. Rescue crews climbed through them, helping the passengers to escape.

The incident happened between Pioltello and Segrate, 40km from Milan.

Delrio said that investment in rail safety and security in Italy had risen 34=% in the last three years.

Television images showed injured survivors being evacuated, the more serious receiving first aid in a field close by. Blood could also been seen on the front of the train.

Another eight people needed to be hospitalized, and some eighty passengers traumatized or with light injured were assisted by the Red Cross at a sport facility in the town of Pioltello.

Debruto told Sky TG24 that it wasn't clear "if that was the cause or the result" of the derailment.

At least six people are still stuck inside one of the carriages, Rai Radio1 reports, though emergency services have not ruled out there could be more.

The reason for the train crash is as yet unknown. In 2016, 23 people were murdered when two trains crashed on a solitary track in an olive woods in Puglia, southeastern Italy.
