Weather Blog: The Super Blue Blood Moon
Skywatchers will get a rare triple treat January 31: a supermoon, a blue moon and a total lunar eclipse. So, what exactly is this rare lunar event?
From supermoons and blood moons to black moons and blue moons, here's a cheat sheet to the full moon in all of her luminous guises.
A Supermoon simply occurs when the moon is at its closest point to Earth (also known as perigee) while the moon is in its full phase. By that time, the moon is almost set, and the morning twilight is quite bright.
The full moon will pass into Earth's dark shadow in the early morning on January 31, making the moon look at if it's glowing red, hence the name, "blood moon".
"This January we had a full moon right on the first day of the month", said Klassen. Positioned on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun, the blue moon will be fully illuminated at 13:26 UTC (8:26 am EST).
Gordon Johnston, NASA's program executive and lunar blogger, said in a news release that those in the Eastern time zone will have a more hard time viewing the eclipse. That is the reason it is called a "Blood Moon".
As is well known, the start and the end of the Hijric months depend on Moon's motion whether it completes one cycle approximately in every 29.5 days or not, and based on that the length of each Hijric month is decided. The gas molecules of Earth's atmosphere scatter bluer wavelengths of light from the sun, while redder wavelengths pass straight through. The next lunar eclipse will happen in late July. The name comes from the red and orange appearance that the moon takes on. For more, here's a great crash course in all things moon by PBS. Here's more on the rare event below. The Middle East, Asia, eastern Russia, Australia, and New Zealand can see it during moonrise.
The sky Wednesday morning will mark a celestial affair that hasn't occurred in the Chicago area in more than 150 years.
This free event will begin during eclipse partiality at 5:30 a.m. on the West Lawn of CSU's Lory Student Center. If you miss out, you won't get another opportunity again until December 2047.
18th century Swiss mummy proves an ancestor of Boris Johnson
Genetic material extracted from the big toe of the mummy was compared to DNA donated by modern members of the Bischoff family. A further clue was that the body was full of mercury, which during the 15th to 19th Century, was a treatment for syphilis.

The world number 11 is now nine under par and just three shots behind leader Thomas Pieters , who carded a second round 65. It's another season, a season that I feel like I'm as prepared for as any season I've started as a professional.
