South Africa's ANC debating Zuma's exit, no date agreed

“Step Down” Zuma Told

ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa

Ace Magashule, ANC General Secretary, told media that the ANC National Executive Council (NEC) has not made a decision to recall President Zuma, who has been under pressure to step down.

The fact that the ANC committee even discussed Mr Zuma leaving is an admission that the president is a "liability", said Mcebisi Ndletyana, a politics professor at the University of Johannesburg.

Zuma could be removed through a motion of no confidence in parliament or by the ANC's National Executive Committee. He's also vowed to fight the graft that have marred Zuma's administration. Mr Ramaphosa is widely expected to follow Zuma as head of state.

South African bonds were marginally firmer on Tuesday afternoon, despite the slightly softer rand, with analysts expecting range-bound trade ahead of the emergence of fresh catalysts in the market. Ramaphosa, 65, on Sunday left South Africa to attend the World Economic Forum in Davos.

"We focussed on education, land, agriculture, reviving the economy and making sure as we move forward we focus on issues of health", he said, reporting on an ANC meeting at the weekend.

Ramaphosa will be supported by the minister in the presidency for planning, monitoring and evaluation Jeff Radebe; minister of economic development Ebrahim Patel; minister of trade and industry Rob Davies; minister of public works Nkosinathi Nhleko and minister of global relations and cooperation Maite Nkoana-Mashabane. Silke said Zuma was a "festering wound" for the ANC, and Ramaphosa had to move rapidly to reassure worldwide investors and rating agencies that the party was changing course.
