"State. can not issue notifications prohibiting the screening of a film".

Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh today moved the Supreme Court seeking recall of its January 18 order by which controversial Bollywood movie Padmaavat was allowed to be released in theatres across India on January 25. The flames of protests have also started surfacing in parts of Delhi, Lucknow and Hyderabad, TV reports claim.

The Karni Sena has also approached the film theatres in Hyderabad and threatened the cinema hall owners not to screen the film.

The governments of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Haryana had declared a ban on the film, which was struck down by the Supreme Court.

A bench including chief justice Dipak Mishra and justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud agreed to hear the plea filed by the two states Rajasthan and MP.

Sources said the government will also discuss other options apart from the review petition.

However, Karni Sena supremo Lokendra Singh Kalvi has said that neither he nor his group "endorses" the violence at the DND flyover.

Despite the changes, several states including Gujarat, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh had banned its screening, following which its producers appealed to the Supreme Court. On Sunday, Rajput women took out a "Chetavani Rally" wielding swords in Chittorgarh on Sunday (22 January).

Earlier, the four states argued that the censor board, while clearing a film, scrutinised filmmaking and ethical aspects but state governments had to factor in possible law and order challenges arising from volatile social dynamics.

The highway to Ujjain was blocked for hours, while police said that Karni Sena activists tried to hijack a truck and set it on fire in Indore.

The film tells the story of a 14th Century Hindu queen belonging to the high Rajput caste and the Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji.
