GETTYRoger Federer has claimed he plans to play an aggressive brand of tennis this season

Defending champion Roger Federer moved smoothly into his majestic stride with a straight-sets win over Slovenian Aljaz Bedene in his opening match at the Australian Open on Tuesday.

"I practice with him so I had the information I needed", he said, adding that the heat doesn't bother him.

"I think that's what's so exciting right now about men's and women's tennis".

Earlier in the week the United States star provided a memorable post-match interview, questioning Swiss maestro Roger Federer in his famous Anchorman persona of newsreader Ron Burgundy. I've had my eyes on Keys since the draw came out and see her as someone who can really test Angelique Kerber or Maria Sharapova down the road in her section.

"I'm sure tennis would be much better off as a whole if they played Roger/Rafa/Serena/Novak/Maria out on court 13 just as often as everyone else. I thought it was a good match, I enjoyed it", said the Swiss second seed.

Tennis fans at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night were privileged to see the 18-time grand slam victor do as only he can before being treated to a special one-off on-court interview.

Since then though, Gasquet has never quite kicked on, failing to reach a grand slam final and developing a reputation as a bit of a choker. In fact, the reigning victor at Melbourne Park is also the odds-on favourite to repeat as Australian Open champion next Sunday. "Not if they're fast enough", said Ferrell.

"If you want to get to the top, you've got to play in all conditions". "But we know it's like this in Australia - the next day it can be freezing".

"Hopefully it's a good story for the people who read it or are watching it on TV, that they think tennis is a great sport, it's actually interesting".

On a day when players wanted to do anything to escape the heat, Madison Keys dropped just one game in her 41-minute victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova to set up a third round against Romanian Ana Bogdan.

Alexander Zverev, the fourth seed, booked a third-round meeting with Hyeon Chung of South Korea after beating fellow German Peter Gojowczyk 6-1 6-3 4-6 6-3.
