Yellow warnings for snow and ice have been issued for the region by the Met Office for tonight, tomorrow and Wednesday.
Snowfall of up to 20cm can be expected on higher ground, with deposits of up to 8cm likely in more populated areas.
A snow blizzard has hit Derry and there was also a report of lightning and thunder over the city shortly after 3:00p.m.
The Met Office said the strongest winds were expected to transfer eastwards from Wednesday evening across before clearing by early Thursday afternoon.
Here are the areas the first warning pertains to; Central, Tayside & Fife, Grampian, Highlands & Eilean Siar, North West England, Northern Ireland, Orkney & Shetland, SW Scotland, Lothian Borders, Strathclyde. Forecasters warn that roads and pavements will turn icy, and accidents and injuries are more likely in northern England, Wales, and the Midlands due to sleet, snow, and hail.
"The snow and ice is likely to lead to hard driving conditions, so I'd urge all travellers to take extra time and plan their journeys in advance".
Any persistent snow is most likely to clear east before dawn on Thursday but further snow showers are likely to follow.
"Snow showers will continue through Tuesday and Tuesday night, although perhaps more of sleet and hail near some coasts".
The wintry weather is set to begin today and run over tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday too.
This will bring up to 10cm (about four inches) of snow to high ground and up to 5cm to lower ground.
"There may also be an impact on other modes of transport, so if you're planning to travel by rail, ferry or plane, you should check ahead with the operator to find out if the weather conditions have affected your service".
'It is also going to be accompanied by some cold winds as well, gale-force winds at time across the south, mainly coastal sites and exposed hills.
"Injuries and danger to life from flying debris are possible, along with some damage to buildings", the spokesman added.
According to Met Office forecasters, there will be occasionally heavy rain and strong winds in the northwest of the UK.
