'Jumanji' Poised to Repeat as Box Office Champ
The new film has already debuted overseas, where it grossed almost $140 million, which translates to a worldwide total of more than $150 million. This is an okay start for his latest action thriller. The film brought in $11.3 million and is approaching $600 million domestically. It's clear that after the success of the Taken series, Neeson is still cashing in by taking parts as Old Guy Action Hero.
"This box office trajectory of "Jumanji" is somewhat unprecedented and certainly unexpected", said Dergarabedian. After a strong opening weekend, it drops 59% from last weekend to $12.1 million. The film, which was made on a budget of about $50 million and fast-tracked after the election of President Donald Trump, is considered as a timely commentary on the power of the press, and a rebuke of Trump from some of Hollywood's biggest names. And hey, it's still the #1 movie of 2018 for those who enjoy small sample sizes. Finally living up to its titular billing in fifth was The Greatest Showman, which is showing tremendous legs, dipping a minuscule 14% with an estimated $11.8 million for the three days, and heading towards $100 million with forward momentum.
Rounding out the January 12 to 14 weekend was Darkest Hour. The action-comedy, starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, has won the first two weekends of 2018 after debuting December 20 in the shadow of "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" - and began significantly outperforming forecasts. At this point, it should be able to make its way to at least $85 million domestically, with likely Oscar nominations putting it higher.
The children's book adaptation sequel "Paddington 2" opened with $10.6 million. $13.7 million over the three-day weekend and $16.4 million including Monday to take third place. "We had some kindling at the beginning for the movie, but now we have a bonfire going".
Word of mouth aside, this one isn't likely to finish great. But Fox added more than 2,000 new locations this weekend. Overseas, it took in $3.4 million for the weekend, bringing its global cume to $13.7 million.
Debuting in the eighth spot is the Taraji P. Henson vehicle Proud Mary with $12 million. The action film was seemingly buried by Sony with only minimal promotion, and I think that's money left on the table.
Coming in ninth is Pitch Perfect 3 with $5.6 million. It has grossed $98.4 million in less than a month and will become the 32nd movie of 2017 to hit the $100 million milestone sometime this week.
In tenth place, Focus' Winston Churchill drama Darkest Hour, which is now playing in 1,693 theaters, took in $4.5 million for the weekend and $5.6 million for the four days, bringing its domestic total to $36.8 million. Actor Gary Oldman's once in a lifetime performance of United Kingdom Prime Minister Winston Churchill has earned the actor both Golden Globe and Critics' Choice Awards.
